Someone talks about themselves too much, are super prideful, and post selfies like it’s nobody’s business. We feel like they’re a narcissist. Well, they might just be. It turns out that narcissism falls on a spectrum just like anything else, according to Healthline. It’s not black and white. Narcissism traits include an inflated sense of importance, a deep need for attention and admiration, a lack of empathy for others, and having troubled relationships. While there are nine traits that account for Narcissistic Personality Disorder or NPD, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, you only need to meet five of the traits to qualify. These types of people usually feel like they are super important, there is no one quite like them, and that they are extremely unique. It’s more than arrogance and vanity, it’s a feeling of being more important than others.
2) Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
This trait is not the typical want for your hopes and dreams to come true. It’s the delusion of reality and when your wants aren’t reflective of those dreams in a pure and honest way. Nothing anyone does is good enough, and everything they do is. It’s toxic!
3) Belief that they’re special, unique, and should only associate with high-status people or institutions
Narcissists will make themselves into the most special, unique, and amazing person you’ve ever met. They are too good for almost everyone and believe they should only be associated with high-status people or institutions.
4) Need for excessive admiration
Narcissists love attention! They might even excessively ask you for compliments, several times a day if this is someone you see daily as a partner. They might get upset or angry if you don’t return the favor.
5) Sense of entitlement
This is a belief that a person has that they are deserving of absolutely everything. It’s like a cognitive dissonance on steroids if something goes wrong or they don’t get their way.
6) Interpersonally exploitative behavior
This is when a person takes advantage of others to achieve their own ends.
7) Lack of empathy
They do not experience anyone’s emotions but their own. There is no feeling bad or sympathizing with another person. Only their feelings matter and that is it!
8) Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of them
This one is huge. There is either envy of others or a belief that others are envious of them. It’s extremely toxic behavior that can rope others in. It’s a strange, strange self-obsession trait.
9) Demonstration of arrogant behaviors and attitudes
This is when you have a snobbish, disdainful, or patronizing attitude about everything in life. This is a typical trait of the narcissist.
